What to Know About Summer Business School Programs
What to Know About Summer Business School Programs A summer business program can provide students with a miniature version of business school, condensed for a short period instead of one, two, or three years. Its like an MBA in a box. These programs, which range from one week to four months, can occur in-person or online and offer a crash course on what to expect from a full-time MBA program. Should you sign up for the experience? Before you submit your application, here are a few questions and answers to help you learn more about summer business school programs. Who are these programs for? Summer business school programs are targeted at college students and recent college graduates. They provide a collaborative environment for project-based learning so that students can increase their understanding of business and explore careers in management. These programs are often held at top universities with elite business schools, such as the Tuck Business Bridge Program at Dartmouth, the Stern Advantage Program at NYU, and Business Edge at Columbia. The hands-on experience and connections available through these programs assist students who want to stand out to potential employers. Specifically, non-business majors, underrepresented students, and students who have not been exposed to the business world are often encouraged to participate in these programs. For example, the one-week Harvard Business School Summer Venture in Management welcomes applications from students who are the first in their family to attend college, or who come from communities that are underrepresented in business schools and corporate America. Similarly, the two-week Yale SOM Global Pre-MBA Leadership Program emphasizes exposure to global diversity and learning from students around the world, including those from cultural backgrounds underrepresented in graduate management programs. However, depending on the program, students who simply want broaden their intellectual perspective on business are often eligible to apply. What areas do these programs cover? Most summer business school programs cover business basics, including accounting, finance, communications, and marketing, as well as leadership and challenges in management. (Youll learn a great deal about these topics, but some students might feel theyd benefit from some online tutoring in one or more of them beforehand to better prepare.) Students in these programs often have the opportunity to make presentations for local businesses and to take field trips to their corporate campuses. For instance, in the Accelerator Summer Institute at Vanderbilt, students spend the four-week program immersed in a consulting project for a real company. They take the skills they learn in Vanderbilt classeslike Operations, Strategy, and Economicsand apply them to solutions for the project. These programs can help build your dexterity in the workplace. Why should I attend a summer business program? Primarily, a summer business program can enhance your marketability when applying for positions in the corporate world. The networking opportunities with peers, professors, and corporate recruiters, as well as career advice from counselors and alumni, can help you become more competitive in the job market. Additionally, at certain programs, you can use your summer to earn college credit. The Summer Business Institute at Emory carries six academic credit hours, the Summer Management Program at Wake Forest offers eight hours of course credit, and the BASE Summer Program at the Haas School of Business offers up to nine upper-division semester units from UC Berkeley. A summer business school program is not a substitute for a masters degree in management, but it can give you a glimpse into MBA life and the many options available to you. It will also provide a better idea of the structure of business. You can add professional skills to your resume, broaden your knowledge of how organizations operate, and boost your career possibilities. With a foundation of business fundamentals, you can use a summer business school program as a springboard to a wider variety of opportunities in the corporate world. Identifying your own category can help you reach a decision on your prices:Self-taught singers: These are amateur singers who usually have a lot of personal experience with performing both alone and as part of a choir.Music undergraduates: learning from someone who is educated to degree-level in music gives learners an opportunity for a level of classical vocal training.Professional voice coaches: Professional teachers are usually found in music colleges or as members of music teaching agencies. As they teach singing full-time, they are more likely to be highly-experienced and offer a range of services encompassing ear training, singing techniques to avoid straining and maintaining vocal health, throat relaxation, and increasing their student's vocal range.Since tariffs usually reflect the teacherâs level of experience, highly experienced teachers will be able to charge more for their services than a self-taught vocalist. This is simply because they will be in a better position to respond to specific demands and easily personal ise their services.Your musical background may affect what you can charge ¦ source: VisualhuntWithin the discipline of singing, there are many genres and vocal techniques to learn about. For this reason, the content of singing lessons varies greatly from teacher to teacher. However, regardless of style, it is always important that students master the singing techniques that underpin a strong musical voice. Teachers should advise students on their posture, breathing techniques and controlling their vibrato. All of these elements help students to use their voices to their full potential whilst looking after their vocal chords, and their complexity may mean that such instruction is limited to professional singing teachers. This is why it is important that you justify your pricing with details of your experience with singing and teaching others how to sing. Here are a few things you may wish to include:Singing qualifications/Grade certificatesProfessional experience (as a singing coach)Art istic experience (as a performer)Other musical abilities (playing the piano, for example)When it comes to musicianship, you will notice that a large number of singing teachers are also musicians in some other capacity. Playing an instrument such as the piano or the guitar is especially useful for students, as it offers them an accompaniment to their singing. So, there are many factors that come into play when you start thinking about the content of your lessons. Even though being able to provide a piano accompaniment is useful, there are always alternatives if you donât play the piano. For instance, there are plenty of orchestral backing tracks that can be purchased or downloaded for the use of singers.Price Depending on the Profile of Your StudentsThe final factor to consider before you set a price is the profile of your prospective students. If you ensure that your pricing is adapted to the needs and goals of your students, your rates will remain attractive whilst reflecting the t ype of tuition you will be providing. This is why it is useful to consider your target market before you enter the world of singing lessons. Just as the lesson content of grade 1 singing will differ from that for grade 8, prices also differ. For example, beginnersâ singing lessons will require far less lesson preparation than lessons for exam preparation, and this justifies the difference in price.Similarly, if youâre teaching a highly-accomplished singer, there will be a higher level of personalisation required in singing lesson planning.Target your advertisments towards those you wish to teach ¦ source: VisualhuntIt goes without saying that the teacherâs level of competence in singing should be significantly higher than that of their student.Learning from a more advanced musician gives students a solid musical base before they begin honing their finer skills such as improving their tone and the quality of their vibrato. Learn about the right singing equipment for singing clas ses.Bonus Tips for Singing TeachersBesides adapting your general hourly rate for the profile of the students you wish to attract, it can also be useful to offer various prices based on other criteria, such as:1st hour freeGroup rates for those who arrange lessons togetherReduced rates for lessons lasting longer than 1 hourPricing for intensive singing coursesReduced prices for online lessons (via Skype)Once you have decided on your pricing and begin creating your profile, make clear the type of teaching you are able to provide. The more detail you provide on your abilities and the format of your lessons, the higher the likelihood that you receive enquiries from your target students. You may want to highlight things such as:Your specialism in a certain field (classical, jazz, opera, gospel, etc.)Experience with leading a chorus or singing workshopsYor ability to train performers for auditions and help them overcome stage fright and improve confidenceYour knowledge of different singing techinques (leading a warm up, breath control, using the head voice, using the diaphragm, etc.)Putting the right price on your services and justifying it with your level of experience and teaching abilities will increase your chances of finding singing students who are as passionate and motivated as you are.

How to Prepare for Your First Day at a New Job
How to Prepare for Your First Day at a New Job Photo Via: Pixabay.com 1. Dress Professionally First and foremost, itâs important that you appear professionally on your first day. Many companies will tell you that their workplace is ârelaxedâ and that business casual is okay, but you should always dress up a bit for your first day until you know for sure. For one, you want to make a good impression, which isnât the case when you show up underdressed. Second, itâs always better to be overdressed than underdressed, so when in doubt on what to wear, go business professional. 2. Donât Come Empty Handed Many individuals make the mistake of showing up for their first day empty handed, so donât fall victim to that problem. While most organizations will provide you with everything youâre going to need for your first day and beyond, itâs a good idea to have a notebook, a pen and a cup of coffee if youâre a coffee drinker, as you never know what youâre walking into. Again, itâs better to be more prepared than necessary than it is to be underprepared, so be sure to bring everything you think you may need and, if you donât need it, no harm done! 3. Map Out Your Route Showing up late on your first day isnât an option. Not only does this look unprofessional, but it also makes a bad first impression. For this reason, you should map out your route in advance so that you donât get lost, you are familiar with the traffic and you leave yourself plenty of time to arrive in the morning. When in doubt, give yourself plenty of extra time, just in case you happen upon construction or an accident. Basically, your first day is important, so arriving early and waiting in your car for a bit isnât a bad thing. 4. Do Your Research Itâs never a good idea to show up to your first day unprepared. For one, you should be researching the company youâre going to be working for (if you havenât already) and you should also check out the LinkedIn profiles of the individuals you will be working with. This not only gives you an idea of what the day to day will look like, but it also helps you to better prepare. When it comes to doing research, you are obviously going to go through training and learn from your manager, but going in prepared with the information already readily available to you showcases your ambition and dedication to the role, which are both good things. 5. Start Brainstorming Along these same lines, when you begin a new job, many individuals show up and begin blind. In other words, they donât know enough about the role to contribute until after they have gone through the training process. For that reason, if you show up having already brainstormed some ideas, youâll be ahead of the curve and your manager will be impressed with your initiative. Basically, the more prepared you are, the more likely you are to impress on day one. 6. Be Ready to Hit the Ground Running Finally, you should always be ready to hit the ground running when you begin a new position. In other words, donât show up on your first day assuming itâs going to be relaxed and more introductory, as you never know. Often, this is exactly the case, but other times, youâll be surprised to learn your new job starts immediately. This is why itâs important to be more prepared than less, and you should always be ready to hit the ground running the second you walk in the door, whether youâre actually going to or not. Again, starting a new position isnât easy, and itâs often overwhelming, scary and stressful. However, when you go into the position prepared, everything seems a lot less overwhelming. The more you know, and the more youâre prepared as to what to expect, the less frightening the entire process is, which means all you need to worry about is doing your job and doing it well. With that all being said, keep these six tips in mind when you begin your next job and thereâs no doubt that you will be successful! Good luck!
AP Test without the Class - by TutorNerds
AP Test without the Class - by TutorNerds Taking the AP Test Without the Class In 2015, high school students are faced with an increasing amount of competition in order to gain entrance to university or college. One of the hurdles that the majority of high school students face is how to score a 5 on their AP exams (READ: Ask a Nerd! Taking the AP Exam). Some students will use these accolades as a way to gain acceptance to college while other students will use them as a way to attempt to graduate university in four years and avoid being a 5th year senior. The cost of education in the United States continues to rise, and students who score a 3 on any of their AP exams will be able to use them for college credit. Students can, potentially, have an entire semester or more of classes under their belt prior to even starting their college career. Although the majority of students who have the opportunity to take AP classes will benefit from such an experience, some students will not have the opportunity to take classes in certain subject areas. Some students have talents that lie outside of history and math â" the most popular AP courses offered â" and others will live in rural or remote areas where AP classes may be severely limited if offered at all. Students who do not have an opportunity to take AP classes at school deserve a chance to be able to score at least a 3. There should be no misunderstanding that this is a substantial commitment and such students will need to conduct a substantial amount of guided self-study with the help or an Orange County AP test tutor. Getting Started 1. Students should purchase the test prep book before even considering signing up for the exam. Its important for students to do this the summer before their AP exams so they have plenty of time to determine whether they will be able to take on this responsibility by themselves. Upon purchasing a test prep book, students should take a full-length practice test and either grade it themselves using the instructions in the book or ask a teacher or educational consultant to grade it for them (READ: Ask a Nerd! Mastering AP English Language). If the student scores a 3, or even a 2, this early on they may have a chance to pass the real test without the opportunity of taking the class at school. 2. Next, students should find educational support. Students who live in urban or suburban areas may be able to find a tutor or study group with ease while students who live in rural or remote areas may find this more difficult. However, with the advent of social and educational technology, even students in the most remote areas of the US will have educational opportunities online. They should consider creating a Google+ Circle or finding a group of students throughout the US who are also conducting self-study and form a virtual study group, preferably in the same time zone. Once a test prep book and educational support has been arranged, students should find the textbook that their teacher would have used (if the class had been offered). Self-study AP students are advised to contact their teacher at school to get a good recommendation or look for the book on the College Board website. Again, with so many teachers and students connecting online, an appropriate textbook recommendation should be relatively easy to find these days. Commencing Study 5. Students who plan on prepping for the AP exam (which is given in May) starting in March are not likely to receive a score of 3 or higher. Students should view it as an independent study class and begin reading through their textbook starting in September. Students who are in an AP class will probably spend five hours a week with their teacher and peers and an additional five hours â" or more â" conducting self-study or working within a group. Self-study AP students should attempt to mimic this time commitment, allowing anywhere between 5 and 10 hours of self-study and time with their virtual study group as well as 5 hours of self-instruction (READ: Ask a Nerd! Grades and AP Class). This can be done with the help of a private tutor or using the test prep book as a guideline. Although it is generally better to take the full AP class, students who do not have this opportunity are still allowed, and should be encouraged, to attempt to take AP exams. With all the technological and educational online resources available today theres no reason why students in remote areas or whose talents lie outside of the core subjects should be denied the opportunity to receive advanced placement credit while in high school. AP College Board Regardless of what grade youre in, its important to finish the year strong. That being said, make sure you book your Orange County academic tutor early! Heres to a successful 2015.
